Need to count something quickly without reaching for a handheld clicker or downloading an app? This free online tap counter lets you tap to count anything — reps, stock, people, laps — right in your browser. Tap anywhere to add one, tap the left side to take one off, and your count is saved automatically, even if you close the tab.

What is a tap counter?

A tap counter is a digital tool that keeps a running total of every time you tap or touch the screen. Instead of counting in your head or making marks on paper, you tap once for every item, repetition or event, and the number updates instantly. That running total is your tap count.

You'll also see it called a touch counter, a finger tally counter or a digital tally counter. They all do the same job as the small metal clicker that door staff, stock takers and coaches have carried for decades: one tap, one count. The difference is that this one lives on the phone or computer you already have, remembers your count when you step away, and can do things a mechanical clicker can't — count in steps, track several totals at once and export your history.

How to use this tap counter

It takes a few seconds, and there's nothing to install:

1. Tap to count. Tap anywhere on the large counting area to add to your total.
2. Tap the left side to take one off. The counting area is split: the right 70% adds, the left 30% subtracts. An accidental extra tap is fixed with one more tap — no hunting for a minus button.
3. Undo or redo. The undo button steps back through your recent changes one at a time, and redo puts them back.
4. Reset when you're done. Reset clears the count to zero after asking you to confirm, so you can't wipe it by accident.
5. Come back any time. Close the tab, come back tomorrow, and your count is exactly where you left it.

Count by 1, 2, 5 or 10

Not everything is counted one at a time. Under the counting area you can choose to count by 1, 2, 5 or 10, and every tap then adds that amount. Counting by 2 suits pairs of shoes or both-sides exercises, counting by 5 or 10 suits boxes of stock, packs or groups of people coming through a door together. The left side of the counting area subtracts by the same step, so corrections stay easy.

Keep several counts at once

Counting more than one thing? Open Options and add as many named counters as you need — "Adults" and "Children", "Passed" and "Rejected", or one counter per aisle. Tap a counter's name to switch to it; each keeps its own total, and every one is saved separately. You can rename or delete a counter at any time.

Set a goal and watch the progress bar

If you're counting towards a number — 100 reps, 250 items, a room capacity of 80 — enter it as a goal under Options. A progress bar appears under the counter showing how far you've got and what the target is. Set the goal back to 0 to hide it and count without a limit.

A full-screen tap counter with sound

Press the full-screen button to fill the whole screen with the counter — useful when you want a big number people can see across a room, or a large target you can tap without looking. Full screen works in browsers that support it, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Android phones; on an iPhone, add the page to your Home Screen for a similar app-like view.

Each tap also gives feedback so you know it registered without looking down: a short click sound and, on phones that support it, a light vibration. Both can be switched off at the bottom of the tool — handy in a quiet room.

What can you use a tap counter for?

Counting taps is useful anywhere you'd otherwise count on your fingers or carry a clicker:

• Stock and inventory counts — items received, picked or shipped; count by 5 or 10 for packs and boxes
• Events and venues — people through a door, with a goal set to the room's capacity
• Fitness — reps, sets or laps without losing your place mid-set
• Classrooms — questions asked, hands raised, or work handed in
• Research and fieldwork — birds, cars, plants or any event you're tallying, with a separate named counter for each type
• Quality checks — defects found during an inspection, with passed and rejected in two counters
• Meditation and prayer — breaths or repetitions without holding a number in your head

Holding a running number in your head while doing something else is harder than it sounds, and it's easy to lose your place when you're interrupted. A tap counter takes that load off you: the number is always on screen and doesn't change until you tap.

Tap counter vs. a handheld clicker

Mechanical tally clickers still work well, and some people prefer the physical click. But they're one more thing to buy and carry, they only count up by one, and if you press the button by mistake there's no way to take it back — many can only be reset to zero. A digital tap counter can subtract, undo, count in steps, keep several totals and save them, and it's already on the phone in your pocket.

Your counts stay on your device

Every tap is saved in your own browser as you go, so refreshing the page or closing the tab never loses your count. Nothing is sent to a server. If you want a record, export your history as a CSV file (opens in Excel or Google Sheets) or as JSON. To start completely fresh, Clear saved data removes everything the tool has stored.
