Need a random object for a drawing prompt, a game of Pictionary or charades, a scavenger hunt or a classroom warm-up? This free online random object generator picks 1 to 20 everyday objects at a time from a hand-picked list of 484 items across 16 categories — each with an emoji and a short drawing hint — and includes seven ready-made modes for sketch practice, games, writing prompts and more.

What is a random object generator?

A random object generator is a tool that picks one or more physical, everyday objects for you at random — a table lamp, a rubber duck, a violin — instead of you having to think one up yourself. It's the same idea as a random word generator, but narrowed to nouns you can actually draw, mime or go and find in the real world, rather than any word at all.

This one draws from a curated list of 484 objects spread across 16 categories — Household, Kitchen & Dining, Electronics & Tech, Clothing & Accessories, Food & Drink, Outdoor & Nature, Office & School, Sports & Toys, Tools & Hardware, Vehicles & Transport, Bathroom & Personal Care, Music & Instruments, Bags & Storage, Fantasy & Sci-Fi, Animals and Buildings & Structures. Each object is picked using your device's cryptographically strong random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with a rejection-sampling step, so every eligible object in your filtered pool has a genuinely equal chance of coming up.

How to use this random object generator

Getting your first object takes seconds:

  1. Hit Generate. By default you'll get one object as a card, with its name, an emoji, its category and a drawing hint.
  2. Or pick a mode first. The mode row above the card sets quantity, repeats, hints, difficulty and category all in one tap — see the modes below.
  3. Adjust quantity if you want more than one. Open Options and use the stepper to draw 1 to 20 objects at once; drawing more than one switches the cards to a smaller grid layout.
  4. Generate again any time. There's no limit on how many times you can hit Generate in a session.

Seven modes for every situation

The mode row sets up quantity, repeats, hints, difficulty and category together, so you don't have to configure Options by hand:

  • Free draw — the default: one object at a time, repeats allowed, hints on, every category and difficulty in play.
  • Sketch challenge — the same settings as Free draw, framed for drawing practice: one object per draw, with its hint visible to guide your sketch.
  • Pictionary & charades — one object per draw, no repeats and hints on, so each round is a fresh item to draw or act out.
  • Scavenger hunt — 12 no-repeat objects at once, hints off, across every category — a ready-made list of things to go find.
  • Writing prompt — 3 no-repeat objects, hints off, for a quick "write about all three" exercise.
  • Classroom / ESL — 8 no-repeat objects, hints off, limited to Easy and Medium difficulty (no Hard items) — vocabulary practice without the trickiest names.
  • Tabletop loot — 5 objects (repeats allowed), hints off, drawn only from the Bags & Storage, Tools & Hardware, Fantasy & Sci-Fi and Household categories — a quick loot table for tabletop RPGs.

Picking a mode also opens the category and difficulty filters it uses, so you can see — and further adjust — exactly what it's drawing from.

Filter by category and difficulty

Open Options for manual control instead of a preset mode:

  • Categories — all 16 are selected by default; use Select all or Clear, or check just the ones you want. Each category shows how many objects it contains.
  • Difficulty — Easy, Medium and Hard chips (based on how tricky an object is to draw or recognize), any combination, though at least one must stay on.
  • Quantity — 1 to 20 objects per draw, set with the stepper or typed directly.

If your combined category and difficulty filters leave nothing to draw from, the tool tells you rather than failing silently.

No repeats, hints and your Recent draws history

A few controls shape what you see on each draw:

  • No repeats — won't show an object again until every object matching your current filters has come up once this session. When the pool is exhausted it clears automatically and starts a fresh round, telling you so; if you ask for more objects than are left in the round, it shows you everything that remains and says how many that was. Reset session appears once this is on, letting you clear that exhaustion tracking manually at any time. It isn't saved between visits — reloading the page starts a new session.
  • Show hints — on by default, this adds a one-line, shape-based drawing hint under each object's name (for example, a wristwatch's hint is "Round face on a wrapped strap"). It's a description of what to draw, not a dictionary definition.
  • Recent draws — a collapsible strip of your last 24 draws, saved in your browser and restored the next time you visit. Click any chip to bring that object back up; Clear empties the list.

Copy, download, print or share your results

Once you've generated one or more objects, four buttons under Generate let you use the result elsewhere:

  • Copy — copies the current cards to your clipboard as "Name (Category)" lines.
  • Download — saves the current result as a plain random-objects.txt file.
  • Print — opens your browser's print dialog with a print-friendly layout that shows just the object cards, hiding every button and control.
  • Share — opens your device's native share sheet where supported (most phones); on a browser without share support, it copies the text to your clipboard instead.

There's also a full-screen "draw mode": the fullscreen button enlarges the current card and hides the surrounding page chrome, while keeping the sound, theme and fullscreen icons visible so you always have a way back out.

What can you use a random object generator for?

Give me a random object, and here's where it's useful:

  • Drawing and sketch practice — the Sketch challenge mode plus the built-in drawing hints give you an endless supply of things to draw, from simple shapes to harder subjects once you turn on Hard difficulty.
  • Pictionary, charades and party games — the Pictionary & charades mode hands each player a fresh, no-repeat object to draw or act out.
  • Scavenger hunts — draw 12 objects at once for a ready-made list of things to find around the house, classroom or yard.
  • Writing prompts — pull 2–3 objects and write a scene, story or description that has to include all of them.
  • Classroom and ESL vocabulary — the Classroom / ESL mode limits results to Easy and Medium items, good for naming and description exercises.
  • Tabletop RPG loot tables — the Tabletop loot mode draws from Storage, Tools, Fantasy and Household categories for a quick "what's in the chest" roll.
  • Decluttering and mindfulness prompts — draw an object as a prompt to find, tidy or get rid of its real-world equivalent.

Random object generator vs. a plain word list

You could get a random noun from a general-purpose random word generator, but a plain word list mixes in abstract nouns (like "freedom" or "chemistry") that nobody can sketch or mime, and it won't tell you anything about what the word actually looks like. This tool is built specifically around physical, drawable objects — each one curated into a category, tagged with a difficulty, and paired with an emoji and a shape-based hint. That's the difference between "give me a random noun" and "give me something you can actually draw or hunt for in five seconds," which is what drawing prompts, Pictionary and scavenger hunts really need.

Your objects stay on your device

Every object is picked and displayed entirely in your own browser — nothing you generate is uploaded or sent to a server. Your theme (light or dark) and sound preference are remembered locally, and your Recent draws history is saved in your browser so it's there next time you visit. Category, difficulty, quantity and mode choices, on the other hand, reset to their defaults each time you reload the page.

Need words instead of objects? Try the Random Words Generator, with quick modes of its own for Pictionary and Charades. Want a single random letter or number instead? See the Random Letter Generator and Random Number Generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free random object generator online?

Yes — this page is one. Hit Generate and you'll get one or more objects instantly, drawn from a list of 484 hand-picked items across 16 categories. No download, account or payment is needed.

Does the random object generator show pictures of the objects?

Each object shows an emoji icon plus a short text hint describing its basic shape (for example, a lamp's hint is "Cone shade over a straight stem") — not an actual photo. If you turned Show hints off, you'll just get the name and emoji.

Is there a spinning wheel version of the random object generator?

No. This tool draws objects as cards rather than spinning a wheel. If you specifically want a wheel-style picker, you'd need a different, wheel-based tool.

Is a random object generator the same as a random item or thing generator?

Yes. "Random object generator," "random item generator" and "random thing generator" all describe the same kind of tool — one that picks a physical, everyday object for you at random. This page covers all three.

Can I use this for Pictionary, charades or sketch practice?

Yes. The Pictionary & charades mode turns on no-repeats and hints so you get a fresh object to draw or act out each time you hit Generate. The Sketch challenge mode uses the same one-object-at-a-time setup, framed for drawing practice.

Can I stop the generator from repeating objects?

Yes. Turn on No repeats and it won't show the same object twice until every object that matches your current filters has come up once. When that happens it starts a fresh round automatically and tells you so; Reset session lets you clear that history manually at any time.

Can I filter by category or difficulty?

Yes. Open Options to choose from 16 categories (Household, Kitchen & Dining, Electronics & Tech, Animals, Buildings & Structures and more) and toggle Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty chips, in any combination.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing you generate is sent to a server. Your theme, sound preference and Recent draws history are remembered in your browser between visits; your category, difficulty and mode choices reset each time you reload the page.
