Counting one thing at a time is easy. Counting several things at once — cars by color, votes by candidate, inventory by bin, laps by swimmer — usually means juggling scraps of paper or a pocket full of mechanical clickers. This free online tally counter runs up to 15 separate tallies side by side, each with its own name, color and total, plus one combined count and goal bar across all of them. Tap to add, and everything is saved automatically in your browser.

What is a tally counter?

A tally counter — also written tele counter or talley counter — is a device that keeps a running total each time you press it, the same job the small metal hand clicker carried by door staff, umpires and stock takers has done for decades: one press, one count. This tool is the digital, multi-item version of that clicker. Instead of a single dial that only goes up, it's a small board of tally cards, each one an independent digital tally counter with its own +1, −1 and reset, all showing on one screen.

Because it's built for counting more than one thing side by side, it also works as a digital tally tracker — add a tally for every category you're watching, and the board keeps every count in view at once instead of forcing you to reset and reuse a single clicker.

How to use this online tally counter

It runs in your browser, so there's nothing to install:

1. Tap a tally to add one. Tap anywhere on a tally card, or its +1 button, to add to that tally's total.
2. Use −1 to correct a tally. Every card has its own −1 button, so an accidental extra tap is fixed with one press — no hunting for a separate control.
3. Add more tallies as you need them. Press "+ Add tally" above the board to add another card, up to 15 at once.
4. Name and color each one. Click a tally's name to rename it (up to 24 characters), and tap the palette icon to cycle through 7 colors so each tally is easy to tell apart at a glance.
5. Reset one tally, or all of them. The circular arrow on a card resets just that tally; "Reset all" (or the header reset icon) zeroes every tally on the board after asking you to confirm.

Run multiple tallies at once

The whole point of this tool is running more than one count side by side. Add a tally per candidate at a straw poll, per species on a birdwatching walk, per product line on a stock check, or per team in a scrimmage — up to 15 tallies, each tracked independently:

• Set a tally to an exact number. Tap the pencil icon on any card to type in a specific value instead of tapping up to it one by one.
• Give a tally its own hard limit. Tap the target icon to cap one tally at a chosen number — it stops climbing once it reaches that limit, separately from the shared Goal below.
• Remove a tally you no longer need. The ✕ on a card deletes it; the board always keeps at least one tally so there's never nothing to count into.

Set a goal and track your combined total

Above the tally board, "Total" adds up every tally's value into one running number, shown against a Goal you set in the footer (100 by default). A progress bar fills in as the combined total climbs, and reaching the goal plays a short fanfare with a light vibration on phones that support it. This is a shared target across every tally on the board — useful when you're counting several categories toward one overall number, like a room's capacity split by entrance.

Choose an LED or Retro number style

Two display styles are built in: LED gives each tally a glowing digital-clock look on a dark panel, and Retro switches to a warm, mechanical-counter look reminiscent of an old wheel-style tally. Switch between them any time with the LED/Retro toggle above the board — it's a display preference only and doesn't change how any tally counts.

Each tap gives feedback so you know it registered without looking down: a short click like a real tally clicker, plus a light vibration on phones that support it. Both are switchable at the bottom of the tool. Press the full-screen icon to fill the whole screen with the board — useful for a shared screen at an event or a classroom headcount where everyone needs to see the running totals.

What can you use a tally counter for?

Running several named tallies at once is useful anywhere you're comparing categories, not just counting one thing:

• Surveys and straw polls — one tally per option, so results are visible the moment counting stops
• Inventory and stock checks — one tally per bin, aisle or product line, each with its own limit
• Wildlife and birdwatching counts — one tally per species spotted on a walk
• Sports and games — points, fouls or possessions per team or player

Digital vs. mechanical tally counter

A mechanical tally counter — the metal hand-clicker still used at some doors and events — is reliable and needs no charging, but it only counts one thing, only ever goes up, and if you press it by mistake there's usually no way to take it back other than resetting to zero. A digital tally counter like this one can subtract, undo, run several named tallies at once, set a limit per tally, and save everything automatically, all from a phone or computer you already have — no separate device to carry or lose.

Tally marks vs. a tally counter

Traditional five-bar tally marks — four vertical strokes with a diagonal fifth stroke through them — are a pen-and-paper way to count in groups of five, still taught in schools and used on scoresheets. This tool doesn't draw tally marks on screen; instead, each tally shows its running total as a number, which is faster to read at a glance than counting strokes once totals get into the dozens or hundreds. Think of it as what a page of tally marks turns into once you'd rather not add them up by hand.

Your counts stay on your device

Every tally — its name, color, limit and value — is saved in your own browser as you go, so refreshing the page or closing the tab never loses your board. Nothing is sent to a server. If you want a record, export your combined total's history as a CSV file (opens in Excel or Google Sheets) or as JSON; note that the export logs the running Total over time, not a separate line per individual tally.
