What is a random letter generator?
A random letter generator is a tool that picks a letter (or several letters) from the alphabet at random, the same job a lettered die, a bag of Scrabble tiles or a spinner would do, but instantly and without any physical props. You'll also see it called a random alphabet generator, a letter randomizer or a random letter chooser — they all mean the same thing: an unpredictable letter, produced on demand.
This one works with the 26 letters of the English alphabet, A through Z, and gives you control over case, which subset of letters to draw from, and whether repeats are allowed in a batch — details a physical clicker or dice roll can't offer.
How to use this random letter generator
It takes seconds, and there's nothing to install:
- Set a quantity. Type a number from 1 to 100 into the Quantity field, or use the + / − buttons.
- Open Options if you want more control. Choose a case, a letter pool, and whether repeats are allowed — or skip this and use the defaults (uppercase, all 26 letters, repeats allowed).

Choose uppercase, lowercase or mixed case
Under Options, Case lets you pick Uppercase (the default), Lowercase, or Mixed. Mixed doesn't just alternate — each letter gets its own independent coin flip for upper or lower, drawn from the same random source as the letter itself, so a mixed-case batch looks genuinely random rather than following a pattern.
Pick a letter pool: all A-Z, vowels only or consonants only
The Letters option under Options narrows which letters can come up:
- All (A-Z) — the full 26-letter alphabet, the default.
- Vowels only — just A, E, I, O and U, a 5-letter pool.
- Consonants only — the other 21 letters.
This is useful for phonics practice, word-building games that need a guaranteed vowel or consonant, or anywhere you specifically don't want the full alphabet in play.
Generate up to 100 letters, with or without repeats
Quantity accepts anywhere from 1 to 100 letters per batch. By default a batch can repeat letters — useful if you're simulating independent draws, like rolling a 26-sided die more than once. Turn on No repeats under Options and the tool shuffles the chosen pool and deals from it without replacement instead, so every letter in that batch is unique.
Because a pool has a limited size, asking for more unique letters than exist in it isn't possible — for example, 10 unique vowels can't be drawn from a 5-letter vowel pool. Rather than fail silently or return duplicates anyway, the tool shows a plain message naming the pool's actual size so you know to lower the quantity or turn off no repeats.
How the randomness works
Each letter is drawn using your browser's Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues) rather than the weaker Math.random(), with a fallback to Math.random() only on the rare browser that doesn't support Web Crypto. The draw also includes a genuine rejection-sampling step: instead of just taking a random byte modulo the pool size (which would slightly favor some letters over others), it discards any byte that would introduce that bias and re-draws until it gets one that maps evenly onto the pool — so every eligible letter has a truly equal chance, not just an approximately equal one. The same unbiased draw powers the no-repeats shuffle and the mixed-case coin flip.
Keep track of your recent results
Under Recent, the tool keeps a running list of everything you've generated this session — up to the last 40 results — so you can glance back at a previous batch without regenerating it. This list is session-only: it isn't saved to your browser and clears when you leave or refresh the page. Hit Clear at any time to empty it sooner.
